Editor's note: Modifying Red Hat Enterprise Linux installation media is not a supported process, but this handy workaround may be useful to you. Please see this solution on the Red Hat Customer Portal for more information and other options that you may wish to consider for your environment.

Not everyone has high-speed network connections to locations where they need to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Customers often ask how they can reduce the installation media to make delivery over slower networks faster. I walk you through the steps to build a custom, small RHEL installation ISO. The default RHEL 7.8 ISO is over 4GB in size; these steps show you how to create a RHEL 7.8 ISO that is 1GB in size and supports a smaller RHEL installation.

In summary, by reducing the number of packages to only those required for the desired installation, one can significantly shrink the size of the installation media ISO file. This size reduction can enable faster deployment or staging times when dealing with slow network connection speeds.

I have seen most of the Linux operating system images that we download from the internet are .ISO format. Typically an ISO image contains the installation of software such as operating system installation files, games installation files, or any other applications.

I really like to create a local RPM repository from the installation media because in the future if I need something, I can simply install it locally, rather than pursuing the installation media later.

IBM provides the possibility, to create multiple LDAP instances on the same installed binary. So technically the binary is the product files and resources and the instance is an actual configuration running on the binaries.

To be able to use the SDS administration web application, you have to deploy it onto a J2EE application server, like WebSphere Application Server (WAS). To do so, first we need to install WAS. We will use the IBM Installation Manager to achieve it.

Hopefully IBM WebSphere Application Server V9.0 and IBM SDK, Java Technology Edition Version 8 will appear in the available installable component. Select all the options and then click button Next. Follow the installation wizard.

You just created a complete IBM SDS installation with some extra components and got it configured! In the section below, I provide a little help how to start / stop or restart the actual server. Now you can start playing around! Happy LDAPing! ?

P.S.: I wrote this blog post while I created my installation, so all the commands and inputs are fresh. If there is a typo or something, sorry. I have proof read it, but this is a day long post (in creation aspect).

The first step on the path to learning about Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 involves installing the operating system. RHEL can be installed either in a clean disk environment (where an entire disk is cleared of any existing partitions and dedicated entirely to RHEL) or in a dual boot environment where RHEL co-exists with another operating system on the disk (typically a member of the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems). In this chapter we will be covering the clean disk approach to installation. Dual boot installation will be covered in Installing RHEL 6 with Windows in Dual Boot Environment.
